Choosing the right R-value for your metal building depends on your geographic location and how the building will be used.

Important: The roof accounts for the largest surface area in most metal buildings and is the primary pathway for heat gain and loss. Always prioritize roof R-value when budget is limited. A building with R-25 in the roof and R-13 in the walls will outperform one with R-19 everywhere.
How Metal Building Insulation Is Installed
Understanding the installation basics helps you plan your project, estimate labor time, and choose the right roll width for your building frame.
Determine Roll Width and Orientation
Measure the spacing of your purlins (roof framing) and girts (wall framing). Standard spacing is 4 feet or 5 feet on center. Match the insulation roll width to your framing spacing. Insulation runs perpendicular to the framing members so the edges rest on the flanges of each purlin or girt.
Unroll and Position
Start at one end of the building and unroll insulation across the framing with the facing side toward the interior. For roof installation, lay the roll across the purlins before the roof panels are installed. For retrofit wall applications, the insulation is placed between girts with the facing visible inside the building.
Secure with Banding or Fasteners
Metal banding is the most common method for securing insulation to purlins and girts. The banding wraps around the bottom flange of the framing member, holding the insulation in place. Alternatively, double-sided tape can be applied to purlin flanges before the insulation is laid, creating an adhesive bond.
Seal Seams and Edges
Overlap adjacent insulation rolls by at least 2 inches at the facing and seal the seam with patch tape. This creates a continuous vapor retardant barrier and prevents gaps that would allow air infiltration or condensation pathways. Pay special attention to penetrations, ridge lines, and wall-to-roof transitions.
